Beating the Holiday Flu! Part 1

Do you or your family members often get sick after the Christmas holidays or any holiday for that matter? Want to avoid being sick in January with the cold or the flu?

Recently I listened to an educational phone called on “Planning your Holiday Dinner” by Donna Roth. What to consider for a healthier holiday?

Are you thinking: If I eat healthy, I can’t enjoy myself? Or – Healthy food does not taste as good as the treats at holiday time and I want to indulge?

You are not alone with that kind of thinking. Many people feel the same way!

But may I ask you to bear with me for a bit and you can tell me what you think afterwards. Let’s listen to what Donna has to say…. Continue reading

Children’s health increasingly at risk; NSP products address parent’s concerns

YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH is more in jeopardy today than ever before, according to health experts.  The Centers for Disease Control report that childhood obesity rates are at an all-time high, and diabetes rates continue to climb.  Children today live in a world of cancer-causing pollutants and toxins, antibiotic-resistant superbugs, and sugar-laden, additive-filled foods.

Modern lifestyle habits are not only toxic for children, but also more sedentary now than they were even ten years ago.  Water and air supplies are being compromised, and family dinners too often consist of fizzy drinks and fast foods.  ”Even for those families who make a concerted effort to live healthier, the task may still seem overwhelming,” explains Garry Ford, General Manager NSP Canada. 8 Ways Parents Ruin Their Children’s Health

Taken from Healthy Children Report
Volume 1.1  Sound Concepts 2010

1. Relying on sugary fruit juices and snacks for children’s nutrition.

Contrary to popular belief, fruit juices and snacks are not a healthy option for children. Too often, they provide more sugar, calories and artificial ingredients than nutritional value. Ditch the bottled juices and boxed fruits products and whenever possible, choose whole fruits and vegetables. Continue reading

Food Skills – Week 6 – Celebration

This was/is the last class for Food Skills, a program that is put on by the Canadian Diabetes.  Currently The Canadian Diabetes is looking for ways to fund this program as the funding they have is being discontinued as of March 30, 2011.   Sad to see as it was an affordable way to reach low income people, to start their awareness of what to consider in order to eat healthier.  This  course could also be use to educate anyone who is interested in learning how to eat healthier.  A great first step!

If you know of anyone who would be interested in sponsoring these class, contact me and I will get you in touch with the right people.

But I am digressing.  Let us look at what is involved in the final class. Continue reading

Foods Skills – Week 4

Back again to give the highlights of this week for Food Skills, after being off for two weeks because of Thanksgiving.   Of all the weeks of Food Skills, I believe this is my favorite.  The reason?  Because people start to get an idea of how much sugar they may be ingesting from some of their favorite drinks.

But I am getting ahead of myself. Continue reading

Kids Bouncing Off The Wall?

This past week-end my son came home for Thanksgiving and a goal of making a costume for Halloween from a basic pattern off the internet.  Many things went through my mind as I helped him design and make this costume.

First of all I am not a much of a sewer – haven’t done it for years – so it was like the blind leading the blind to say the least although he had much more insight into how it was done. Although we did a lot of ripping I enjoyed the time we spent together.  And the costume turned out great for no real pattern…..

It also reminded me of Halloween and some of the customs that go along with Halloween, such as dressing up.  It can be a lot of fun dressing up and pretending to be someone or something else for awhile.  It can really get the creative juices flowing.

However there can also be a downside to Halloween with all the treats that children receive and ingest.  A lot of kids will be bouncing off the walls for the next few days.

If you are interested in hearing about some ways to help alleviate that from happening, read on. Continue reading
